The Happiest Uterus

This week’s blog is by Yinova acupuncturist and herbalist Marie Amato

dreamstime_7840828Over the weekend I had my first Maya Abdominal Massage™ and I wanted to share this experience with the Yinova community. I was lucky enough to study this technique from our favorite Mayan masseuse, Nicole Kruck. For those of you who have not yet been introduced to the Maya Abdominal Massage™, let me tell you a little about it. It is a non-invasive manipulation that gently repositions reproductive organs that may have shifted out of place.

How can I tell if my reproductive organs have shifted, you ask? Excellent question. According to Nicole any number of things can lead to uterine displacement. From something memorable such as impact from a car accident to something less obvious such as a minor fall during childhood. Everyday living can eventually result in mild displacement of the uterus. Sometimes you might not even know that you are out of line. Alternately you may experience symptoms such as painful periods, pain during intercourse, or brown blood at the end of your menstrual cycle.

So what’s the big deal if your uterus is a little off center? Aren’t we all a little off center? Well, the big deal is that a displaced uterus can impinge upon local channels, blood vessels and lymph causing impaired flow of qi and blood to the reproductive system as a whole. Impaired flow of qi and blood leaves us with accumulations or what we like to call “stagnation”. Oh how we hate stagnation! This can make a big difference in your fertility. Proper flow of qi and blood to the uterus is paramount in achieving a healthy pregnancy. Here’s where it gets really interesting…

dreamstime_2045608The Maya Abdominal Massage™ is a technique, developed by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, that you can perform yourself at home every day. It is designed to realign the uterus by gently reducing adhesions and promoting circulation in the surrounding area. With a few months of daily massage, you can strengthen the 13 ligaments that surround and support the uterus helping to bring the uterus into proper alignment. After learning the technique under Nicole’s careful instruction, I set off home to continue my daily technique. It takes just about 5 minutes and the benefits are impressive. You won’t have to wait months to notice a change. After just a few days, I can tell you my abdomen feels better. It’s subtle and difficult to describe but it’s noticeable. Things feel less tight and as if there’s more flexibility within my core.

dreamstime_5099537The Maya massage isn’t just for healthy fertility. People also use it to help digestive and bladder problems. What’s more guys don’t need to feel left out. You don’t even have to have a uterus to reap the benefits of a Maya massage! This type of massage is also helpful in preventing prostate swelling and increasing blood flow to the pelvic region for men. For just a few minutes a day of self-care, you will be making a worthwhile investment in your general wellbeing. At the Yinova Center we recommend a visit to Nicole Kruck to find out about Maya Abdominal Massage. Her website can be found here.
